Created in February 1964, the park system offers almost any athletic program you can think of for children and teens; a walking trail; camping and fishing; a first class playground, pavilions, tennis courts; swimming pool; and even a nature trail.
The park's successful diamond-based sports, like baseball and softball, are played on 13 fields and are so successful, some say, that many people come to the park that don't have children playing in the games, just to be a part of the action and eat some of the good food at the concession stands.
Located on Hwy 15 north, inside the city limits near the National Guard armory, is already the hub of sports activity in the parks system.
The department's youth baseball, softball and T-ball programs are the parks most successful, boasting about 1200 participants per year.
The baseball program, for boys ages 6-14, is one of the parks most storied offerings. Games are played from April through June. In addition to the baseball program, the park also has other popular diamond sports.
The park's T-ball program is for ages 4-5 boys and girls, and begins in June and runs thorough the end of July. Another big program for children at Northside is the soccer program, for boys and girls. The program began in 1990 and has increased steadily in popularity since.
The park also sponsors a fall football program.
In addition to sports, children can also enjoy Imagination Fun Station, a playground constructed in fall 2000 by community volunteers for about $118,000. The playground has all sorts of activities, and even has a large pavilion for parties.
Children aren't the only ones who can get exercise at Northside Park. There is a mile walking trail, and several picnic tables for convenience.
This division of the park system is located on Hwy 15 north, about five miles outside Philadelphia.
Burnside Park is a part of the parks system especially for outdoor-lovers. The park has over 110 acres of outdoor activities, including fishing, camping and hiking.
The Pearl River runs conveniently nearby, allowing for great fishing and non-motor boating. There are 28 camper hookups available. Pavilions are available at the park, including a 40x100 feet air conditioned auditorium, which some civic groups use for get-togethers.
There are miles of hiking trails nearby, and three lighted baseball-softball fields.
BOOKER T. WASHINGTON
Numerous youngsters attend Headstart in the newly renovated Booker T. Washington facility. The park consists of a recently refurbished gymnasium where youth basketball is held.
Westside Park, located in the city off Carver Avenue on the west side of town, is the location for the public swimming pool, another playground, outdoor basketball courts and the Westside Community Center.
Pick-up basketball is a frequent activity at Westside Park, and the pool is the only public pool in town.
The community center is probably the park's main feature. Used for family reunions, weddings, and singings, it's also the home of the Miss Black Neshoba County beauty pageant each year.
